the johan plomp small bigband

The Johan Plomp Small BigBand (2 trumpets, 3 trombones, 3 saxes and a rhythm-section) was founded in 1993 as the Hilversum Conservatory Small BigBand. It was the result of a request from Vincent Soekra, a student of the Dutch Film Acadamy, to record the soundtrack of his re-make of the old Ellington film A Symphony In Black. This co-operation resulted in the short film Another Symphony In Black (1994, 18min) wich played in several movie-theaters in the Netherlands.

Little over a year later a theatre production followed containing the two movies and the music performed by the band with a choreography for 24 dancers. After that show the band recorded a promotion cd for the hilversum conservatory and later changed its name in the Johan Plomp Small Big Band. Since then the band has been performing on several radio and television shows (TROS sesjun (tros, 1998), de Show van je Leven (vara, 1999), Jazz op West (radio west, 2001) and toured with Willem Nijholt and Greetje Kauffeld through 28 theaters and got great revieuws with the show the Award Winners, arranged by Jerry van Rooyen and Johan Plomp. The style of the band is best to be compared to the so-called east-coast big band style (inspired by Bill Holman, Thad Jones, Terry Gibbs, Buddy Rich etc.) and the repertoire consist standards aswell as compositions by Johan. All the titles the band is playing are arranged by Johan Plomp.
